The majority of the fillings that we place are composites. We utilize several different systems that offer a variety of different shades and translucencies. This allows us to place a natural looking restoration in just one visit.
Composites offer other advantages as well. They are hardened with a UV light, which means that the patient can function on them immediately without risk of a fracture. Composites are bonded to the teeth. This means that less tooth structure needs to be removed in order to successfully restore the tooth.
In addition to treating decay, composites can be an effective, less expensive, means of repairing cracked or broken teeth and closing the spaces in between teeth.
As with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long lasting, beautiful smile.
How are composite fillings placed?
Composite fillings are placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, we will remove the cavity or old filling. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed. If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special medication will be applied for added protection. The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.
