Crowns are placed for both functional and esthetic reasons. During the course of a person's lifetime, it is not unusual to have a filling replaced several times on a single tooth. Each time that a filling is replaced, it becomes larger. Once the remaining tooth structure becomes insufficient to support the filling, a crown is needed. Crowns can also be placed to cover up a discoloration or congenital defect.
Crowns can be made of gold, porcelain or a combination of the two.
CrownsWhen crowns are linked together to replace a missing tooth, it is called a fixed bridge.
Procedural videos for both a single crown and a fixed bridge may be accessed through our dental video link.
